Researches on restrictive expressions in contemporary Japanese have only been focusing on the sole aspect of restrictive adverbial particles, having overlooked restrictive adverbs, especially double restrictive phrasings containing both restrictive adverbial particles and restrictive adverbs, which have never been mentioned. This paper investigates the restrictive functions of both adverbial particles and adverbs and clarifies their differences when being used as restrictives. In modern Chinese, all words having restrictive functions are adverbs. Therefore, placing Japanese restrictive adverbs into the frame of restrictive expressions for analysis can be enlightening for Japanese-learners whose native language is Chinese.
