The implications of paradoxical liberty and solution to the political reform have been absent in the criticism of George Eliot in the past ten years. On the basis of the implied paradoxical liberty from Mathew Arnold and Raymond Williams, this paper revisits Middlemarch for its metaphorized paradoxical liberty and solutions to the reform. The paradoxical liberty in- dicates that one' s own absolute free power is inevitable invasion into others' civil right as offensive interference into others' liberty. One of the solutions to the paradox might be such an establishment of the value structure consisting of equality and co- existence in order to prevent the powers of the states, organizations and individuals from trespassing into others' free domain and interfering in others' personal freedom, thus in turn, to protect the real freedom of citizens, organizations and states.
