Objective: To survey on the exercise situation of middle aged and elderly people in Wuhan and explore the impact of exercise on two early detection indicators of atherosclerosis, pulse wave velocity (PWV) and ankle brachial index (ABI). Methods: A questionnaire on exercise status was conducted to 1 056 middle aged and elderly people who went to our hospital for physical ex- amination, and PWV and ABI as well as some other arteriosclerosis-related biochemical indicators were recorded. Results: Of the 1 065 participants older than 45 years old, only 8.2% kept regular physical exercise. The abnormal detection rates of PWV and ABI were 45. 1% and 1.8% in all participants. The abnormal detection rates of PWV and ABI were 4:6.9% and 1.7% among the people who didn't exercise; meanwhile, these rates were 24. 1% and 1. 1% among the people who always exercise. The abnormal detection rate of PWV among the people who always exercise was higher than the people who didn't exercise (P〈0. 001), and the average level of left ABI a- mong the people who always exercise was lower than the people who didn't. Conclusion: Exercise can affect the level of PWV and ABI in the middle aged and elderly people, so the population should be encouraged to take part in more exercise.
