Objective To study the changes of spinal cord histopathology, local blood flow of the grey matter, motor evoked potential and motor function after acute incomplete paraplegia in rabbits. Methods Rabbit model of incomplete paraplegia was established with the anterior spinal cord impingement method of Guo Bangfu. Then the changes of the blood flow of the grey matter, motor evoked potential and motor function of the animals were observed and the histopathological changes of the damaged cord tissues were studied with light and electron microscopy after the animals were killed at different time points after injury. Results The blood flow of the grey matter was decreased to the lowest point in the 6th hour after injury and then recovered gradually. The motor evoked potential showed similar changes to the blood flow of the grey matter. Motor evoked potential and motor function of the animals gradually restored their normal level along with the recovery of blood flow and pathological changes of the spinal cord. Conclusion Local blood flow of the grey matter, motor function and motor evoked potential after acute incomplete paraplegia is consistent with the changes of spinal cord histopathology.
