摘　　要：《近代图书馆之性质及功用》一文是刘国钧一生中为数不多的图书馆学基础理论论著中相当重要的一篇。重读《近代图书馆之性质及功用》,在分析1919—1922年刘国钧其他若干著译佚文基础上,结合当时的学术思潮背景,进一步梳理发现:除受约翰.杜威思想的影响外,"新文化运动"期间中外各种学说思潮,特别是教育思潮,亦促发形成了刘国钧的图书馆"自动"观;其对图书馆"社会化"和"平民化"的认识也是从教育学中的"社会化"和"平民化"推演而来。他的图书馆制度观具有先见之明。The Nature and Function of the Modern Library is one of quite important papers in few Liu Kwoh-chuin＇s basic theories of library science works in his life. Through rereading The Nature and Function of the Modern Library, analyzing Liu Kwoh-chuin＇s other wroted and translated papers in 1919-1922 with the background on the academic trend of thoughts at that time, we could find that in addition to be affected by the idea of John Dewey, a variety of Chinese and foreign theory thoughts, especially the educational thought during the New Culture Movement, also contributed to form the idea of the library automation by Liu Kwoh-chuin. His ideas of the library socialization and civilianization were also deduced from the education socialization and civilianization. His ideas of the institution of libraries showed foresight.
