The settling particulate matters were collected respectively by sedimentation trap in Jiulongjiang Estuary from March 28 to March 29 in 2009. Laser particle size analysis, X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Disperse Spectroscopy(EDS) analysis were applied for the analyses. The grain-size character- istics and the clay mineral composition characteristics were analyzed. The types of settling particulate matter (SPM) and their flocculating sedimentation are discussed. It shows that the different layer settling particulates have different particle size and clay mineral composition characteristics. The types of single particle are composed of biol- ogy and minerals, and other particles while the flocs types of SPM are of larvacean houses and diatom, of mineral debris and fecal matters and the mixed flocs of biological and organic maters. The types of SPM are affected by to- pography, runoff and currents while the main factors that affect the distribution of SPM are terrestrial detritus input and human activity. Besides, particulate flocculation is also affected by many factors such as salinities in the estu- arine and organic adsorptions.
