摘　　要：在爱伦·坡小说研究史上,《裘力斯·罗德曼日志》因其叙述未及抵达既定的核心故事便宣告结束,成为名符其实的"残篇",其美学价值亦随之被认为是"丧失殆尽"。针对这种狭隘的阐释传统,本文试图通过观照爱伦·坡小说美学的独特肌理将《日志》的文本残缺视为其创作风格的合理延续,并在此基础上论证小说在关键节点上的"断裂"恰恰是深化其伦理内涵的绝妙之笔:裘力斯·罗德曼的探险之旅绝不仅仅是一个青年人物的成长仪式,它在深层语义结构上乃是对19世纪美国国内拓殖进程的映射。坡将传统西部游记文学中的"边疆征服"设置为人物心中的至高理想,但却在其即将实现那一理想的前一刻终止叙述,从而在话语层面上瓦解了拓殖神话的构建。与此同时,《日志》的文本残缺还凸出表明小说的逻辑重心并非指向罗德曼如何穿越洛基山脉,而是通过其探险之旅反观印第安民族身份如何在白人拓殖进程中遭受剥夺。在此意义上,《日志》通过文本的残缺实现了其完整的伦理批判。In the history of Poe fiction studies, The Journal of Julius Rodman has all along been regarded as having ＂virtually no aesthetic value＂ mainly because the narrative is terminated before reaching its preset core story, and hence a veritable ＂unfinished piece.＂ Given this parochial interpretive tradition, this article, in light of the unique features of Poe＇s fictional aesthetics, intends to treat The Journal＇s unfinishedness as a reasonable extension of the Poesque style, and, in so doing, take the narrative ＂breakdown＂ at the crucial point as a forte of ethical criticism： Rodman＇s expedition does not so much signify a young man＇s rite of passage as project, by means of its deep-level semantic construct, the cultivation of the domestic colonization in the 19th-century United States. Poe sets as the protagonist＇s loftiest goal the ＂frontier conquest＂ traditionally portrayed in the Western travel literature, but terminates the narration immediately before that goal is about to be reached, and hence nullifying the mythological consummation of the colonizing process. Meanwhile, the story＇s logical orientation, as highlighted by The Journal＇s unfinishedness, is not towards Rodman＇s crossing the Rocky Mountains, but towards a reflection upon the problem of how the American Indians are deprived of their ethnic identity. In this sense, The Journal realizes its complete ethical criticism through its textual unfinishedness.
