Taking the data of co-authored papers from Hubei province for example, the paper studies the regional science collaboration network dominated by innovative city ( such as Wuhan) from cooperation strength, network density, distance preferences, and polarization effect in Hubei province using geographic information system ( GIS ) technology. Results show that: a large science collaboration network exists in Hubei province, and the network spatial distribution difference is significant. The cooperation strength between regions is impact- ed by geographical location and richness of technological resources. The network is like a left side "V" shape as a whole, in which Wuhan is the pole, and it constitutes a "one pole and multi-cores" structure with the regions of Yichang, Jingzhou and Xiangyang act as those multi-cores. The buffer distance of cooperation parmers differs from region to region, Wuhan and the surrounding areas are superimposed most by buffers. The network polarization effect is very obvious, and Wuhan is the foundation to guarantee network stability. Based on the research results, corresponding recommendations are proposed to improve regional science collaboration network from four aspects.
