The promyelocytic leukemia zinc finger (PLZF) protein, also known as ZBTB16 (zinc finger and BTB domain containing 16) or ZFP145 (zinc finger protein 145) , was first reported as a human disease-associated protein. The human PLZF belongs to the POK (POZ and Krtippel) protein super- family, a transcription repressor, and consists of 673 amino acids residures. PLZF is characterized by a N-terminal BTB/ POZ domain, which associated with various biological events, such as ontogenesis, embryogenesis and chromosomal remodeling. The function of PLZF in acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) in recent studies showed that it played a critical role in regulating mammal germline stem cells (mGSCs) development and differentiation. This review summarizes the latest advances about the roles of PLZF in maintaining and regulating mGSCs self-renewal and differentiation and provides helpful information to further understand the mGSCs development.
