Published in 1919, Night and Day is considered as Virginia Woolf's most traditional novel, and thus is consistently ignored by critics. This paper re-examines this novel from the perspective of space, arguing that it is much more subversive and experimental than it appears to be.What lurks behind its seemingly conventional form of narrative is Woolfs consistent challenge and subversion of the hierarchies represented by the distinctions of public and private sphere, male and female experiences; meanwhile, she problematizes the social system and social values that underpin the patriarchal marriage. Through Katharine's drawing-room resistance, Woolf exposes the restrictions of domestic space imposed upon women in their education and self-construction. However, unlike feminists of her time, she also questions the idea of women entering the public sphere as a solution to their problem of identity construction. Woolf intends to blur the boundaries between public and domestic spaces the moment she invokes them, or, it might be more appropriate to say, she invokes such boundaries only for the purpose of deconstructing them. Nevertheless, it should be noted that Wool f has realized the limitations of her literary experimentation within the traditional form of narrative, which may account for the fact that the courtship plot never occupies a central position in her novels after Night and Day.
