During the critical period of social transformation from the end of 19th century to the beginning of 20th century in America, enormous shift took place in the fields of politics, economics and culture. As one of the important aspect of cultural industry, fast developing journalism participated in all levels of modern society. Taking the role of training school, "Penny Press" introduced many young men with literary ambition to vital subject matter, nourished an attitude which reinforced a respect for creative honesty and integrity, and provided a medium for them to express themselves when other opportunities were not immediately available. In addition, many literary works got published on newspapers in the form of series, which had an impact on the relationship between authorship, text and readership. In the meanwhile, the distinction between fact and fiction, journalist writing and literary creation had been blurred with the trend of popularization of American literature.
