Opinions differ on the ethnic identity of the governors of the Return-to-Allegiance Army at Dunhuang from Family Cao. There are two main opinions, one arguing they were Chinese and the other regarding them as the Sogdians. Judging by the phenomena that the death of these governors was usually called "ending (of life)" instead of "passing away," this study compares the posthumous titles of Chinese and ethnic minority officials of the same rank and comes to the conclusion that they would have come from ethnic minorities.
