摘　　要：1925年5月30日,上海发生了英国巡捕枪击中国示威学生的惨案,事件发生后,北京政府外交部迅即向公使团提出严重交涉,中外双方代表随后在上海举行了谈判。由于中方提出著名的"五卅十三条"为谈判基础,外方以超出授权范围为由中止谈判。其后,公使团迫于中国反帝运动的压力,作出了处分上海公共租界工部局责任人员的决定。英国政府得知消息后,大力推行对华强硬政策,果断制止公使团的行动,并争取到其他各国同意对沪案进行司法调查。通过该项调查,英方拼凑了法理依据,为直接肇祸的工部局巡捕开脱罪责,并将结论强加给北京政府,致五卅案交涉以中方惨败而告终。On May 30^(th),1925,the 'May Thirtieth Massacre' occurred when British police opened fire on Chinese students taking part in a demonstration in Shanghai.After the massacre,the Beijing government immediately made serious representations to the foreign diplomatic corps,after which Chinese and foreign representatives held negotiations in Shanghai.Because the Chinese side proposed the famous ' Thirteen Conditions of May Thirtieth' as the basis for negotiations, the foreign side halted the negotiations on the grounds that complying with those conditions exceeded their authority.Later on,under pressure from the Chinese people's anti-imperialism movement,the foreign diplomatic corps decided to punish the members of the International Settlement's Shanghai Municipal Council who were responsible for the incident.After receiving this news,the British government vigorously pursued a hard-line policy toward China,resolutely halting the measures taken by the diplomatic corps.The British government further convinced other foreign governments to conduct judicial investigations into the case.By means of these investigations,the British side concocted a legal argument to shake off the guilt of those policemen who were directly responsible for the incident,and forcibly imposed their conclusions on the Beijing government.As a result,the May Thirtieth Massacre negotiations ended with an abject failure for China.
