Objective To explore the effect of health education on increasing the dietary compliance among advanced schistosomiasis patients with ascites, and analyze the influencing factors of health intervention. Methods Health education was carried out among 90 advanced schistosomiasis patients with ascites selected by convenient sampling methods, and the effect of health education was assessed by self- designed questionnaires. Results The score of dietary compliance was raised from ( 15.73 ±4.22 to (20.43 ±3.39), and the rate of dietary compliance went up to 92.22 % from 56.67 % (P 〈 0.05). Accord- ing to characteristic classification, the dietary compliance in age, sex, marital status, education background, family income (per capita monthly income of ≤300 Yuan), duration of disease, history of upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding, and the times of hos- pitalization was improved (P 〈 0.05) ; moreover, that in primary school and lower education, the unmarried/divorced/widowed, disease duration of above 6 years, history of upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding, and the times of hospitalization (≤2) increased sharply. Conclusions Health education can improve dietary compliance of advanced schistosomiasis patients with ascites, and the nutrition intervention should be implemented to the patients with lower education, longer disease duration, history of upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding, and fewer hospitalization, and the unmarried/divorced/widowed.
