Yiyu refers to the divine figure with a human head and a fish body. Yiyu was firstly seen in the Sui tombs in Hebei area. It was more seen in the Tang tombs in Hebei and Hedong areas, particularly in tombs of the middle-and-low classes. It was spread to the southern China in the late Tang and Five Dy- nasties time and was seen in noble tombs. The Yiyu figures can be divided into two types according to their shapes and forms, one prevalent in Hebei area and the other in Hedong and the southern areas. It is believed that the Yiyu figures seen in the southern areas were from Hedong area, which reflects the influence of He- dong to the south on burial customs.
