In The Heirs of Columbus, Vizenor, an American Indian writer, presents a parodic revision of white people's historical-narrative concerning Columbus's journey to the American Continent, thereby subverting the colonial discourse that avows the white to be the discoverer of the American Continent and dissolving the civilized/barbarian and dominator/dominated dichotomy. Moreover, his revision of the Columbus myth opens the possibility of existing in the Third Space for contemporary American Indians, especially those mixed-blood ones. By way of depicting how the mixed-blood heirs of Columbus found a nation of mixed-blood tricksters and establish a new pattern of survivance upon the complicity of conflict and alliance between the American Indian tradition and the white culture, Vizenor voices his people's desire of coexisting equally with mainstream white culture and in the meantime, accomplishes the re-establishment of the cultural identity of his own.
