The natural background levels and ranges of fluoride in groundwater of Pearl River Delta were calculated with the Mathematical Statistics Method based on regional groundwater samples scaled by 1:250000 and the regularity of statistics and distribution of the fluoride contents were also analyzed in this paper. The distribution patterns of shallow groundwater are shown to be skewed, mainly caused by anthropogenic activities. The contents of fluoride ranges from 〈 0.05 to 0.59 mg- L- 1, which are lower than 1.5 mg- L- 1, according to the standard of WHO water quality. The relatively high natural background levels are mainly distributed in the delta alluvial plains, while the relatively lower level distributed in the hilly areas. The nature of the upper soils and the aquifer lithology, the conditions of groundwater runoff, alkalinity as well as seawater intrusion in coastal areas may contribute to the distribution of fluoride in groundwater. The occurrence of high value outliers ranging from 1.6 to 4.0 mg. L-1 is closely related to fault zones and emergence of thermal springs in deep groundwater. This study provides a scientific evidence for management of water resources and prevention for endemic diseases in Pearl River Delta.
