摘　　要：在小说《我们的一员》中,薇拉·凯瑟通过克劳德·维勒的故事,巧妙地将西部拓荒生活与第一次世界大战结合在一起。随着工业革命和现代文明的发展,原本纯朴自然的西部边疆渐渐受到侵蚀,传统美德和边疆精神逐渐消逝。克劳德对之深感痛惜,对工业化的生活无比厌倦。他努力追寻传统的边疆神话,均以失败告终。一战爆发后,他将参军入伍视为追寻边疆神话的另一条途径。最后牺牲在法国战场上时,他认为自己终于在正义光荣的事业中实现了所追寻的梦想。因此,小说中的农场生活和作战经历两大部分实则浑然一体,共同揭示了克劳德通过参战来追寻边疆神话的虚幻性,说明美国政府利用人们对传统边疆神话的怀旧,来鼓动他们为国家利益参战。Through the story of Claude Wheeler in One of Ours, Willa Cather connects the western frontier life with the First World War. With the development of the industrial revolution and modern civilization, the simple and natural western frontier is gradually encroached, and the traditional virtues and frontier spirit disappear, over which Claude greatly grieves. Tired of the industrialized life, he tries to pursue the traditional frontier myth, but all in vain. The outbreak of WWI offers him another opportunity to pursue the myth by joining in the army, and he dies on the French battlefield, believing he has realized the dream in the just and glorious cause. In this sense, the two parts of the novel, the farm life and the fighting ex- perience, are united into a harmonious whole to reveal the illusion of Claude＇ s pursuit of the Frontier Myth through fighting the war, demonstrating the American government＇ s efforts to mobilize people to fight for the national interest by arousing their nostalgia for the traditional Frontier Myth.
