。Biochar (BC) application has bee n suggested as an effective means of abating climate change by sequestering carbon. In this study,a 3-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of biochar on soil organic carbon (SOC) cycling. BC was applied as a basal soil amendment in 2009 at the rates of 0, 10, 20 and 40 t hm-2, and soil total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), readily oxidizable organic carbon(ROC), particulate organic carbon (POC) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC)were monitored in 2012. BC applications significantly increased SOC storage by 9.15 - 15.49%, and TOC, ROC, POC and MBC were also increased by 12.75 23.36%, 12.60 - 28.00%, 10.88 N 34.00%,7.97 - 12.35% by BC application, respectively. The results suggested biochar-sourced organic carbon could be steadily maintained in soils for long run (3 years at least). TOC was very significantly correlated with ROC and MBC, while there was a very significantly correlated between ROC and POC, MBC, which were related to the capabilities of BC to improve soil structure and promote crop growth. Thus, BC application is a continuous effective measure to improve organic carbon storage and the contents of soil active organic carbon of paddy soil.
