摘　　要：南通与周边苏州、扬州等城市相比,书坛一直比较沉寂冷清。张謇本身即为有影响力的书法家,于书法创作、书法理论、书画收藏均有很深造诣,因此他对南通书法的发展颇为关注和用心。他成立书法社团组织、优化交流环境;加强书法教育,培养书法人才;促进书法文化传播,营造书法文化景观。张謇对书法有着深刻的理解,非常看重书法经世致用的实用功能。他一方面注重书法的经济价值,将书法作为其慈善公益事业的补充;另一方面又注重书法"成教化,助人伦"的教化作用,注重书法在教育中对人品、修养的提升作用,注重书法"改良社会"的实用功能。在其推动下,近代南通书法的发展达到前所未有的繁荣,并一直延续至今。Compared with neighboring cities like Suzhou and Yangzhou, Nantong has not been so famous in the field of calligraphy. Zhang Jian was an influential calligrapher and had a solid foundation in creations and theories of calligraphy, as well as in drawing. Therefore, he was concerned about the development of calligraphy in Nantong, and he founded an association of calligraphers, and optimized the atmosphere for calligraphic exchanges. Meanwhile, he put emphasis on the education of calligraphy and cultivation of calligraphic talents, so as to promote the wide-spreading of calligraphy. Zhang Jian had a profound understanding of calligraphy, and emphasized the educative and instructive functions of callig- raphy. On the on~ hand, he focused on the economic value of calligraphy and regarded it as a supplementary element of charities. On the other side, he emphasized the educative and enlightening functions of calligraphy. With his persistent advocating, the calligraphy of modern Nantong achieved great accomplishments and has been prosperous since then.
