The sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci B biotype, is a dangerous agricultural pest with widespread distribution due to its high resistance to insecticides and strong host utilization. This results in severe damage on vegetables, fruit trees, ornamental plants and several economical crops. It is widely believed that the evolutionary fitness of the whitefly can be attributed to its ability to metabolize host plants using detoxification enzymes. In this study, the carboxylesterase (CarE) activity of two groups of Bemisia tabaci B biotype was investigated. The two groups, with their original host being cucumber and bitter melon for 3 generations, were transferred to 13 new hosts. It was found that CarE activity level is significantly higher for the bitter melon group than the cucumber group, which indicates that feeding experience could have a prolonged effect to the physiology of the whitefly and enable them to improve adaptation to new host plants.
