摘　　要：《曾经有一个国家》是尼日利亚著名作家阿契贝的绝笔。作家以生动和沉稳的笔调再现了尼日利亚内战期间(1967—1970)他本人或是听闻或是亲历的那些或许已被世人遗忘的人和事。该书糅文学家的诗意柔情和历史学家的辩证思维为一体,检视了内战发生的背景原因、战争进程及其对民众尤其是"比尔弗拉"平民的肉体与精神戕害,充分体现了作家高尚的人文主义情怀。《曾经有一个国家》的出版再次说明,这场曾让无数生命凋零的惨剧是当代尼日利亚知识分子心中的一个巨痛,也是他们在思考其国家和民族命运时一个无法回避的话题。There Was a Country(2012)is Chinua Achebe,agreat Nigerian author's last work published a few months before his death.This book records vividly with gravity what the author learned about or experienced during the Nigerian Civil War(1967—1970).By interweaving poetic affection with the dialectical thought of a historian,Achebe re-examines the causes and the process of the Civil War and the destructive influence it has on Nigerian people especially Biafra's citizens.There Was a Country implies the author's unaffected humanitarian concern for the warfare which victimizes hundreds of thousands of innocent lives.The publication of this book suggests that the tragic traumatizing war has become a grave topic that will never be left unnoticed by Nigerian intellectuals who are deeply concerned about the future of their country and people.
