Objective The study was conducted to establish the clinical significance of variations in serum levels of gastrin (GAS), motilin (MOT) and insulinoid growth factor-1 (IGF-1) among children with severe pneumonia. Methods A total of 62 cases (30 children with severe pneumonia and 32 children with common pneumonia) were randomly selected from patients who were diag- nosed between February 2010 and June 2012 according to the diagnostic standards, while another 30 healthy children were selected as the control group. Fasting venous blood samples were collected from the children in the morning. Serum levels of GAS, MOT and IGF-1 in the blood samples were determined by radioimmunoassay. Results The serum levels of GAS, MOT and IGF-1 in the se- vere pneumonia group were distinctly higher than the common pneumonia group, while the serum levels of GAS, MOT and IGF-1 in common pneumonia group were higher than the control group. The differences were statistical significant between the three groups (P〈O.O1). In addition, the serum levels of GAS, MOT and IGF-1 in the severe pneumonia group were negativnely correlated with PaO2 level (P〈O.01,/9〈0.05). Conclusion Monitoring the serum levels of gastrin, motilin and insulinoid growth factor-1 is a infor- mative approach for evaluating the severity and prognosis of pneumonia in children.
