摘  要:华文学校在华存在36年,数以千计的欧美人士在此接受汉语和中国历史文化教育,培养了大量的杰出汉学家、外交官、军事人员。美国第一代中国问题研究专家大多曾在此学习生活,学校教职员如马尔智、恒慕义、明义士,及其学生如富路特、毕乃德、费正清、宾板桥、卜德、韦慕庭等,对美国汉学界作用尤为凸显。这些曾在华文学校工作或学习过的汉学者,日后开创了美国中国学研究。华文学校之所以对美国汉学界贡献甚大,在于其不是一所纯粹的语言学校,非常重视文化课程。广邀中外著名人士演讲,让青年学生听到有关中国问题的不同声音,有助于他们开阔视野,全面了解中国,为研究汉学储备丰富的知识。College of Chinese Studies, whose predecessor was North China Union Language School, existed in China for 36 years. Thousands of European and American people received the education of Chinese language, history and culture in this College, which cultivated a great deal of excellent Sinologists, diplomats and military personnel. Most of the first generation of American Sinology experts once studied and lived in this College, whose faculties such as Benjamin March, Arthur W. Hummel, James Mellon Menzies, Luther C. Goodrich, Kight Biggerstaff, John King Fairbank, Woodbridge Bingham, Derk Bodde, Clarence M. Wilbur and so on played a particular im-portant role in the Sinology field in the US and created American Chinese Studies later on. The reason why College of Chinese Studies greatly contributes to the American Sinology field is that it is more than a pure lan-guage school, which also emphasizes cultural courses. Besides, the college invites many domestic and foreign scholars with reputation to give lectures to broaden young students ' view with different opinions on the problems relating to China, so as to form a comprehensive understanding about China and laying a solid foundation of knowledge.
