Although the high uric acid levels usually associated with CKD, it remained controversial whether hyperuricemia was the risk factor of the CKD development or deterioration, which was likely to lower of the true risk factor. It was reported in recent epi- demiologic studies of healthy populations and patients with kidney disease that the uric acid was the very factor which was likely to lower glomerular filtration rate and increase the risk of developing kidney disease. Moreover, lowering uric acid (independent of other influ- encing factors), according to the report, is useful for patients with established renal disease to stabilize renal function, manifesting that uric acid is the reason of CKD progression. In this paper we will discuss the potential role of uric acid in the development and aggrava- tion of CKD based on epidemiologic, clinical and experimental studies.
