Objective To study the relationship among sleep quality, perceived stress, perceived social support and self-esteem in medical students. Methods A total of 278 medical students were assessed with PSQI( Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), CPSS( Chinese Perceived Stress Scale), PSSS( Perceived Social Support Scale)and SES (Self-6steem scale). Results The average score of PSQI was ( 4.94 ~ 2.46). 11.2% of all participants exhibited clinically relevant sleep disturbances. The overall prevalence of health risk stress was (43.5%). 16.5% students had poor perceived social support. The prevalence of low self-esteem was 15.1%. There was a significantly positive correlation between the total scores/the components of PSQI and the CPSS score. In addition, there were significantly negative correlation between the total scores/mostly components of PSQI and the PSSS/SES score. Conclusion The prevalence rate of sleep dis- orders in medical students is high. Many students suffer from stress and low self-esteem, and receive little social support. Stress, social support and self-esteem can affect sleep. Comprehensive and effective measures should be taken to improve the unhealthy psychophysical state.
