文本内外艺术观的微妙平衡——伊迪丝·华顿的《善会降临》与亨利·詹姆斯的《下一次》

摘　　要：亨利·詹姆斯与伊迪丝·华顿分别见证了英、美两国作家职业化的发展,并有不少以此为主题的短篇问世对比华顿的短篇《善会降临》(That Good May Come,1894)与詹姆斯的短篇《下一次》(The Next Time,1895),有助于了解19世纪末作家转型期间作家与出版界以及读者大众的复杂关联。本文从高雅文学与通俗文学之分这一视角切入,通过解读这两个文本,阐明詹姆斯与华顿在保持各自艺术观微妙平衡方面的尝试。Henry James and Edith Wharton produced abundant short stories that reflect their understanding of the rise of professionalization of authorship in Britain and the United States respectively.A comparative study of Edith Wharton's short story 'That Good May Come'and Henry James' s 'The Next Time' proves conducive to the reader's understanding of the complex interrelations among authors,publishers and the public.Through an analysis of the two stories from the perspective of the division between high literature and popular literature,this paper aims to illustrate the efforts James and Wart made to maintain balanced artistic beliefs.
