摘 要:中西古代大学通识教育是以培养"通人"为宗旨、藉由经典传授而发展心智的教育,其历史演进对各自文明的传承与传播产生了深远影响。近代以来,中国大学形成两种通识教育传统,包括以儒学为核心理念,兼容诸子学说、佛教文化的古代大学教育传统及以西方大学制度为组织模式,融合中西教育理念,涵盖人文、社会和自然科学三大知识领域的近代大学通识教育传统。其中所倡导和实行的育人为先、通识为本的大学理念,通专结合的培养模式,国学教育的课程建设,品德与才学并重的师资标准,民主治校和兼容并包的管理方式,注重环境育人的校园文化导向,均具有重要的现实价值。The general education in universities in Chinese and the west is the education aiming to cultivate a "generalist" or a "whole person" which takes the classics as the teaching material to develop students'minds. The evolvement of general education has deep and profound influence on the transmission and spread of civilization both in China and the west. Since the modern times, the universities in China have formed two kinds of general education traditions, one is the general education tradition in ancient universities, which takes the Confucianism as its core idea, containing other theories of the philosophers and scholars then, and Buddhism as well; the other is the general education tradition in modern universities, which use the systems in western university as its organizing mode, combining the western educational ideas with that of Chinese. Fully understanding and objective appraising of the general education tradition in Chinese universities, carrying forward the excellent tradition of the general education in both Chinese ancient and modern universities, have important practical value in higher education in China.
