摘　　要：亨利·詹姆斯的《小说的艺术》是英美小说理论史上最重要的单篇论文之一,它奠定了英美小说理论形式主义传统,也可以看作是现代主义文学的一个宣言,并且基本指明了成熟期詹姆斯文学发展动向,因此很有必要对其进行文本细读。这篇论文除了体现了詹姆斯的美学观点外,还包含了大量的英国文化信息。英美小说理论著作的一个重要特点,就是理论话语和艺术经验之间细针密线的缝合,所以对中国读者来说,困难来自于对二者细致的剥离。细读这篇文章,既要分析该文的立论之递进的结构和多元层次,又需要勾勒出该文主要观点所指涉的历史语境。Henry James'The Art of Fiction has remained one of the most influential essays of the Anglo-American novel theory. This article provides a close reading to decode the cultural context that implicitly shapes the dialogic platform for James to develop his main ideas and launch his polemic arguments. To understand the rise of the novel theory all of sudden around 1884 in England,it is necessary to view the whole tradition that had impeded the emergence of such possibility. One of the illuminating and constructive features of James's article lies in its slow uncoiling out of old ideologies and foretells a new theoretical horizon to establish the novel writing as a work of art.
