The Battle of Caishi (采石之战), which broke out between the armies of the Southern Song and Jin Dynasties, aroused great enthusiasm among the scholars of the Southern Song Dynasty and their active participation brought about many valuable works. The Three Letters of Military Affairs on the River (《江上军事三札》) written by Yu Yunwen (虞允文) was the first work which recorded this battle. Scholars like Jian Ju ( 蹇驹 ) Yuan Xingzong ( 员兴宗) and others who knew the details of the battle extolled their victory in the battle with Yu Yunwen' s military exploits. Their writings were mainly poems and essays recording this event. Other scholars like Zhang Xiaoxiang (张孝祥) and Yang Wanli (杨万里) knew little about the event but they also extolled the victory of the battle, and their works were practical writings, which mainly expressed their emotions and praised the battle. Scholars of the Late-Southern Song Dynasty realized the military attainments of Yu Yunwen as a scholar, who focused his poems and Fu on expressing his emotions and arguments. The literary works created by Yu Yunwen about the Battle of Caishi formed an indispensable part of the mainstream of the patriotic literature in the Southern Song Dynasty.
