摘　　要：在《一位女士的画像》中,詹姆斯以表妹明妮为原型,成功地塑造了新女性伊莎贝尔的形象。他分析了新女性的困境,委婉地批判了她们思想中的幻想与书生气,认为她们那些脱离实际的独立与自由观念不仅不会带来自由和幸福,反而会让她们轻易落入一些有野心的男性权威者的陷阱。虽然詹姆斯笔下的新女性命运坎坷,但他并不是捍卫男性权威的代表。他同情女性的遭遇,关心女性的成长,笔下的新女性命运引人深思。This paper analyzes Henry James＇ s view of New Woman and its representation in The Portrait of a Lady. Through the portrait of ISabel in this novel, James has analyzed New Woman＇ s dilemma in the patriarchal society and indirectly criti- cized their bookishness and illusions about absolute independence and freedom. James tends to think that New Woman＇ s unre- alistic opinions about independence and freedom will not bring them the freedom and the happiness they want, but will easily make them fall into the traps of some ambitious male authoritarians. Although in the novel Isabel has suffered from a fate of loveless marriage, this doesn＇ t mean that James is a male authoritarian on the women issue. On the contrary, he is sympathet- ic with New Woman＇ s harsh realities and care for their positions in a patriarchal society.
