摘  要:《看得见风景的房间》是爱德华·摩根·福斯特的六部著名小说之一,表现了意大利下层人民对于自由、爱、真诚的理解与英国中产阶级的保守、抑制、虚伪的生活环境之间的矛盾。维·苏·奈保尔的小说作品多以后殖民世界移民的漂泊性和无根性为特点。他的代表作《毕司沃斯先生的房子》描写了毕司沃斯先生一生对于"房子"的追求,体现了多重文化身份的移民对于自由空间和归宿的向往。通过对两部作品中"房子"不同内涵及其象征意义的探索,即"房子"一方面是自由、地位、尊严的象征,另一方面代表着禁锢、守旧、窒息的环境,结合象征主义原理,说明两部作品采用相同的象征手法,却反映了截然不同的主题、价值观及社会历史背景。A Room with a View, one of Edward Morgan Forster's six famous novels, shows the contradiction between Italian lower class' understanding of freedom, love and honesty and English middle class' living envi- ronment of conservation, depression and hypocrisy. V.S. Naipaul's novels are characterized of the migrants' vagrant and rootless features in posteolonial world. A House for Mr. Biswas as his representative work de- scribes Mr. Biswas' pursuit of the "House" during all his life and reflects the dreams of multicultural migrants for freedom and homeland. The different symbolic meanings of the "House" in respective novels are studied, that is, the "House" on one hand represents the freedom, status and dignity, and reflects an environment of confinement, fogyism and suffocation on the other hand. The paper is intended to state that by using the symbolism in the same way, two novels mirror the theme, the values and the social and historical background which are entirely different.
