The late 19a' and early 20a century saw a notable rise of interest in the study of the Oedipus myth in Europe, where much influential interpretation on the subject was produced. The present essay intends to investigate how Henry James ( 1843 - 1916), in his 1903 novella The Beast in the Jungle, has possibly reflected and responded to the dis- cussion of the myth by Hegel, Nietzsche, and Freud respectively. Based on the analysis of the text' s mythic allusions, this essay goes beyond the traditional archetypal criticism with its focus on the "representation" of the myth and will instead un- derscore the dynamic historical meaning of the text.
