To study the absorption area and soluble sugar concentration of Solanum melongena L. root under low temperature, six materials with different cold resistance were low-temperature treated with 4 000 lx lighting 15/10 ℃ in day/night for 2 days, 4 000 lx lighting 10 ℃/7 ℃ in day/night for 10 days. Several characters such as absorption area, active absorption area, ratio surface area, soluble sugar concentration were investigated. The results indicated that normal temperature had no significant in- fluence on these characters. Low temperature extremely significantly influenced on these characters (P 〈 0. 01 ). Root vitality decreased and soluble sugar concentration increased after the low temperature treatment. Correlation analysis showed that chilling tolerance was significant positive partial correlation with absorption area and soluble sugar concentration (P 〈0. 01 ). It could be concluded that the growth of eggplant seedlings were negatively influenced by low temperature stress, but the metabolism could ad- just themselves to avoid low temperature harms.
