Objective To investigate the time regularity of brain computed tomography images changes after different causes of death in rabbits. Methods Different death models were established by mechanical suffocation, hemorrhagic shock and air embolism respectively. CT scaning was performed to investigate the postmortem cerebral changes after death. Brain area/cranial cavity area ratio, the average CT value of brain tissue and average cranial CT value of the overall were determined and analyzed statistically. Results The average CT value of brain tissue was iirst increased and then decreased with the extension of postmortem intervals, but with almost no changes for the ratio of brain area/cranial area within 27h postmortem. Brain area/cranial cavity, average cranial CT value of the overall decreased 33h postmortem with the extension of postmortem intervals. The regression equations were established successfully to reflect change trends. Conclusion Multi- parameter nonlinear regression equations obtained by modern CT imaging techniques would provide an objective and accurate method for estimation of postmortem interval.
