云南省壮语地名taau^4(道)源流考  

On the Origin of taau4 道 in Toponyms Used by Zhuang Ethnic Group in Yunnan Province

摘　　要：云南省壮族侬支系称文山州广南为taau^4,与唐朝岭南道的"道"字具有音义对应关系。中古汉语词"道"在台语里最早用来指羁縻地区的世袭首领。Guangnan, a toponym in Chinese, is designated as Daux （[taau4]） by the Nung branch of the Zhuang ethnic group living in the suburb of Guangnan city, Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. This designation is also used by the Nung branch distributed in the Honghe Prefecture and other parts of the Wenshan Prefecture Yunnan. This word as well as its counterparts in other Tai languages are borrowed from Middle Chinese, corresponding in both pronunciation and meaning to the word dao 道, originally the designation in the Tang dynasty referring to the area of Lingnan Dao 岭南道. Upon its borrowing, however, this loanword was firstly used in the Tai language to designate the indigenous hereditary chieftains in the Jimi 縻 regions.
