Nuclear energy is used in military and economic areas as a new energy; however at the same time, potential health problems can not be ignored which are caused by radioactive materials of nuclear leakage. At present in medical area research and treatment system of nuclear radiation is still uncompleted, lacking of relevant theoretical researches. There are some advantages of TCM in preventing and treating radiation, such as two-way regulation and non-recurrence and so on; yet the unclear TCM pathogenesis limited the wide application of CM in dealing with radiation. Integrating the existing experimental results of this research project and based on pathological characteristics of radiation, this article discussed TCM etiology and pathogenesis of radiation injury from four aspects: water (kidney) fails to put out fire (heart) and therefore heart fire flares up; water(kidney) fails to nourish gold (lung) and leads to Yin deficiency of both lung and kidney; kidney Yin is deficient and nourishment of body is inadequate after being born; Yi (liver) and Kui (kidney) are derived from the same origin but water fails to nourish wood (therefore leads to imbalance of liver). Studies showed that pathogenesis and prevention of radiation diseases were closely associated with the deficiency of kidney Yin.
