The Gravedigger's Daughter, written by Joyce Carol Oates mainly talks about a Jewish immigrant who had suf- fered a lot in the process of hiding her Jewish identity, pursuing American identity and eventually returning to Jewish identity. It reveals the soul journey of Rebecca, living in the anti--Semitism America, in pursuit of "herself". In view of cultural identity, we discuss the reasons that lead to the change of Rebecca's identity: On the one hand, the "change" is the conflu- ence of Jewish culture and American culture rather than a simple decomposition or assimilation. On the other hand, the re- turn of Jewish identity doesn't mean her denying of American culture, but actually a decision made by herself on the basis of a complete understanding of her history and reality. Jewish culture will always influence, specify and restrain the life of A merican Jewish immigrants in various ways no matter whether with an American identity or not.
