论情节在哈代悲剧小说中的重要性——以《同乡人》为例  

On the Significance of “Aristotelian Plot”in Thomas Hardy's Tragic Novels ——with Reference to Fellow-Townsmen

摘  要:在古希腊悲剧和哈代悲剧小说的比较研究中,较常见的是以命运观和人物性格为中心进行对比。可是根据亚里士多德的《诗学》,古希腊悲剧的核心是情节;哈代也认为对小说而言,情节或者说结构的重要性胜于人物。因此,以情节为中心进行比较研究无疑是最好的选择。在亚里士多德看来,好的悲剧情节必须要有发现或突转,二者是引发观众怜悯或恐惧的关键要素。哈代的悲剧小说中众多的偶然或巧合与其说是古希腊悲剧中命运观的反映,不如说是哈代巧妙地运用了古希腊悲剧情节中的发现或突转。通过对哈代短篇小说《同乡人》的分析,可以印证此观点。Fate-centered and character-centered views prevail in the comparative studies between Greek tragedy and Hardy' s tragic novels. However, according to Aristotle' s Poetics, plot is the most important part of tragedy. Similarly, Hardy regards that plot or structure plays a more crucial role than character in his no-vels. Undoubtedly, plot-centered studies are more favorable in the comparative studies. According to Aristot- a complicated plot must include "Recognition" or "Reversal", which plays a key role in invoking the au- dience' s emotions of fear or pity. Many coincidences in Hardy' s novels can be better explained through the concept of "Recognition" or "Reversal" than from the perspective of "Fate" or "Character", which can be proven by the analysis of Fellow-Townsmen, one of the short stories in Wessex Tales.
