Objective: To observe whether average clinical concentration of moxa smoke can cause systemic anaphylaxis reaction, and to evaluate the safety of moxa smoke. Methods: 8 healthy guinea pigs, 4 male and 4 female, were exposed to 3-4mg/m3 of moxa smoke. For sensitization, the animals were sensitized for 3 times, 20min each time every other day. For challenge, they were exposed to the same concentration of moxa smoke for 40min 14 days after the third sensitization. The symptoms were closely observed and recorded during sensitization period. Another 3 hours were required for observation after challenge. Every animal was weighed respectively on the days of the 1st sensitization, the 3rd sensitization and the challenge. Results: Animals were seen normally and there was no symptom of systemic anaphylaxis reaction during sensitization and challenge with normal body mass gain. Conclusion: The average clinical concentration of moxa smoke can not result in systemic anaphylaxis reaction in guinea pigs.
