摘　　要：沃尔特·惠特曼是自学成才。靠着如饥似渴的阅读．才渐渐熟识了《圣经》以及荷马、但丁、莎士比亚的作品。他曾在纽约做印刷工．直到一场大火将厂子化为灰烬。1836年17岁的惠特曼在长岛当起了老师，其教书生涯一直持续到1841年转行做新闻为止。Largely self-taught, Walt Whitman read voraciously1, becoming acquainted with the works of Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, and the Bible. He worked as a printer in New York City until a devastating fire in the printing district demolished2 the industry. In 1836, at the age of 17, he began his career as teacher on Long Island. He continued to teach until 1841, when he turned to journalism as a full-time career. He founded a weekly newspaper, and later edited several Brooklyn and New York papers. In 1848, he became the editor of the New Orleans Crescent, but soon returned to Brooklyn where he founded the newspaper, Brooklyn Freeman, in response to the viciousness of the slave markets he witnessed in New Orleans.
