Objective This study was to compare the chronic effect of two kinds of Luzhou-flavor liquor on alcoholic brain injuries in rats. Methods 55 SD male rats of clean grade were randomly divided into blank control group, the ethanol control group, liquor no. 1 group and liquor no. 2 group. Ethanol solution of 48.0% (v/v) was used for the ethanol control group. SD rats were orally administered with the two kinds of liquor daily for 12 weeks. Blood samples were then taken from the femoral artery of rats to measure the level of neural specific enolase (NSE). After that, the animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation to take the brains for measuring the total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA), and for the brain histopathological examination. Results Compared to the group treated with liquor No.2, the group of liquor No.1 displayed less pathological damage. Meanwhile, the level of SOD increased (P〈0.01) and the content of MDA reduced (P〈0.01) in the group treated by liquor No.1. Conclusion The Luzhou-flavor liquor No. 1 caused less alcoholic brain damage in rats, suggesting that fusel oil and aldehyde etc. in liquor are the factors causing brain damage.
