摘　　要：语言符号任意性的思想不仅是索绪尔对后世影响巨大的普通语言学理论的基石,也是语言学界一个世纪以来一直热议的话题。索绪尔的这一思想不是一蹴而就的,而是和他整个的语言符号学思想一起,经历了一个不断发展和逐步完善的过程。通过梳理、对比和分析索绪尔三期普通语言学课程中的有关内容,可以真实地展现其语言符号任意性思想发展的阶段性和不断构建的过程,全面和系统地揭示这一思想的深刻内涵,从而为人们准确地理解和客观、公正地评价他的这一思想提供一些建议。Saussure＇ s idea that the linguistic sign is arbitrary forms the cornerstone of his general linguistics theory which has great influence on the following generations. It has also been a hot topic in the circle of linguistics for more than one hundred years. However, this idea was not shaped overnight. It experienced a process of continual development and perfection. A careful study of Sau- ssure＇ s three courses of lectures on general linguistics through comparison not only clearly manifests the stages of the development and the gradual construction of his idea of arbitrariness, but it also comprehensively and systematically reveals the profound meanings of his arbitrariness. This will not only help us understand his idea of arbitrariness correctly and accurately, it will also give us some beneficial enlightenment in making an objective and fair comment on Saussure＇ s arbitrariness.
