This paper analyzes the correlation between Wilde' s critical theory in the late nineteenth century and Hartman' s deconstructionist criticism. Opposing the idea that criticism is inferior to creation, Oscar Wilde proposes in his The Critic as Artist that criticism is both creative and independent, thus claiming criticism is itself an art. Geoffrey Hartman, based on the deconstructionist theories, also holds that criticism is independent of the text it criticizes and literary commentary may cross the line and become literature. Resorting to Hartman' s deconstructionist criticism, this paper gives a postmodern re- examination of Wilde' s critical theory.
