(P<0.05).From June 2012 to April 2013, digestibility trials were conducted on nine sun bears( He- larctos malayanus)at Shanghai zoo in spring, summer and winter. Feces and forage samples were taken in each season to analyze the digestibility of sun bear foods during different seasons. We quantified the influence of sun bear age on digestion. Each trial consisted of 5 days of pre-ex- periment followed by 5 days of formal experiments. The apparent digestibility percentages of dry matter, fat and crude protein for adult sun bears were 71% 、 71% and 66%, respectively. There were highly significant difference between summer and winter, or summer and spring( P 〈 0. 01 ), and no difference between spring and winter ( P 〉 0. 05 ). Of different age groups in summer, young sun bears had highest digestibility of dry matter, fat and crude protein (82±6)%, (85 ± 6)% and(80±7)%, respectively), while old sun bears had lowest digestibility(71±3)%, (78±4) % and (70 ± 5) %, respectively). Young and adult bears showed significantly higher digesti- bility of dry matter than old bears ( P 〈 0. 05). Fat digestibility did not differ by age group ( P 〉 0. 05). Crude protein digestibility was greater in you bears than in old bears(P〈0.05).
