In Chinese culture, the phrase "being star-crossed" is a viewpoint of fatalism held by people when they become helpless confronted with some unlucky destinies. Xionglian, a poetess born in Rugao County of Jiangsu Province in Qing Dynasty, focused on this theme in her poetry. Because of Xionglian' s unfortunate marriage, the idea "being star-crossed" always occurred in the poetess' sorrowful expressing of her own life in her works, which reflected the tragic destinies of many insulted and unfortunate women of all ages similar to her own fate. While experiencing her own misfortunes, the poetess expanded her horizons beyond herself and began to think about the destinies of women in the feudal society based on her own "star-crossed life". And then, the poetess established an ideal writing mode of "hermaphrodite" for the women writers in later ages, surpassing the limitations of gender as well as individual and lamenting the tragic destinies of the ambitious but unlucky scholars.
