Product Diversification and Gains from International Trade: A Literature Review

摘  要:产品多样化在国际贸易和经济增长中扮演着重要角色。产品多样化与国际贸易收益的相关研究主要沿着三个方向展开:(1)产品多样化的界定与测度。产品多样化内涵丰富,其测度方法包括集中度指数、Feenstra指数和贸易增长扩展边际三类;(2)出口产品多样化与经济增长。出口产品多样化可通过资产组合效应、"出口中学"和"发现"效应、知识溢出效应、出口"自选择"效应等推动经济增长,基于多国样本的经验研究大都证实了出口产品多样化对经济增长的积极作用,但针对单一国家的经验研究结论不一;(3)进口产品多样化的福利效应和增长效应。理论和经验研究均表明,除了静态的消费者福利效应外,进口产品多样化还具有动态的增长效应。Product diversification plays an important role in international trade and economic growth. Related studies on product diversification and gains from international trade mainly follow three directions: (1) definition and measurement of product diversification. Product diversification is richly defined, while the measurement methods fall to three categories: concentration index, Feenstra index and the extensive margin of trade growth; (2) export diversification and economic growth. Export diversification can promote economic growth by the portfolio effect, "learning by exporting" effect, "discovery" effect, knowledge spillover effect and "self-selection" effect of export. Empirical researches based on multinational samples have repetitively confirmed that export diversification has a positive effect on economic growth, whereas results of empirical researches on a single country showed inconsistency; (3) the welfare effect and growth effect of import diversification. Theoretical and empirical researches have both shown that import diversification has a dynamic growth effect in addition to the static consumer welfare effect.
