Objective To explore the effects on new born infants after pregnant women infected with Toxoplasma gondii. Methods Matched blood samples were collected from 356 paired mothers and babies to detect the infection of T. gondii. An ELISA triple diagnostic reagent was used for the test of circulating antigen (CAg), antitoxoplasma antibodies IgM and IgG. Results The average infection rate of Toxoplasma in pregnant women was 19.1%, among them the positive rate of CAg, IgM and IgG was 16.9%, 0.3% and 2.2% respectively. From the matched infant samples, the proportion of vertical transmission of CAg was 35.2% (19/54) and IgG was 33.3% (4/12). The results indicated that near one third fetus were infected from their mothers before gave birth. 4 cases of congenital malformation were investigated, among them 2 serum samples were positive. Conclusion About one third fetus were able to get infection through placenta from their mothers which caused vertical transmission before gave birth and the development of fetus could be impaired even malformation and death.
