Objective To investigate the normal heart rate limits in a Chinese population and to assess the traditional criteria of normal heart rate. Methods 5 360 (3 614 men and 1 746 women) healthy individuals were divided into five age groups: 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and ≥60 years. The electrocardiogram of each individual was recorded ,and their heart rate was measured by computer . The median, lower and upper limit heart rates were calculated, and the age and sex differences were examined. Results The median, lower and upper limit heart rates were 5-6 beats/min higher in young women than in young men. Fifteen percent (817/5 360) of the study population had a heart rate <60 beats/min, with a prevalence of 18% in men and 9% in women. The lower normal limit for men was close to 51 beats/min in all age groups, whereas women showed a decreasing trend from 55 to 51 beats/min with increasing age. The upper normal limits decreased with age for both sexes, while it increased again after the age of 50. The overall upper limit heart rate was 95 beats/min. Conclusion This study suggests that the traditional criteria for sinus tachycardia and bradycardia need adjustment when applied to a Chinese population.
