In order to understand radiation characteristics in Antarctica, observations of the solar radiation at Zhongshan Station were carried out during Jan. -Feb. 1990 by using automatical spectral pyranometer of model TBQ-4. Based on the obtained data, some characteristics of radiation, especially the mean diurnal variations of the total radiation, near infrared, visible radiation, and ultraviolet radiation in clear sky and cloudy sky conditions are analyzed. The results show that: 1. The instantaneous maximum of total radiation is 0.629 w/m2, it is lower than that in Great Wall station in summer. 2. In clear sky, diurnal variations of the ratio of visible radiation, near infrared radiation to the total radiation are very small, but for the ultraviolet radiation the ratio has significant diurnal changes. 3. In clear sky, the instantaneous maximum of ultraviolet lower than that in Lasha district of China. 4. In clear sky, the ratio of the visible radiation, near infrared radiation, ultraviolet radiation to the total radiation is 42.2%, 53.3%, 4.5% respectively, but in cloudy sky the corresponding values become 48.2%, 46.2%, 5.0%. 5. From clear sky to cloudy sky, the total radiation decreases by 52.5%, near infrared decreases by 58.5%, visible radiation decreases by 48.0%, and ultraviolet radiation decreases by 44.5%. 5. While low cloud amount changes From 2 to 4-6, the total radiation decreases by 51.6%, near infrared decreases by 64.9%, visible radiation decreases by 56.4%, and ultraviolet radiation decreases by 51.6%
